Rain cell tracking

A method has been developed for improved extreme rain cell tracking by enhancing the Thunderstorm Identification, Tracking, Analysis, and Nowcasting (TITAN) object-based storm tracking algorithm combined with an the optical flow technique, which is a field-based storm cell tracker. The enhanced tracking algorithms has applications for rainfall interpolation in time and space, for characterizing the spatial-temporal properties of rain storms, and for nowcasting. To support the characterization of the spatial-temporal properties, a conceptual rain storm model was proposed and a radar data based calibration procedure developed that makes use of the tracking algorithm.
