7th October 2014

Agenda

Morning Session

08:30-09:00: Arrival & Coffee
09:00-09:10: Welcome and introduction (Susana Ochoa, Marie-Claire ten Veldhuis)

09:10 –10:00: Summary of lessons learnt so far on rainfall estimation, nowcasting and flood modelling: WP2 and WP3 (Patrick Willems & Susana Ochoa – 2 x 20 min)

10:00 – 11:00: Interactive session to discuss outcomes and practical implications of lessons learnt from WP2 and WP3 (Examples of questions for discussion: Is 30 min lead time of rainfall and/or flood forecast enough for early warning? What measures can be taken following early warnings and how much time is needed? What temporal and spatial resolution of rainfall inputs should we suggest using for urban hydrological applications? What is the added value of higher resolution rainfall estimates and models?)

11:00– 11:30: Coffee break

11:30 – 11:50: Summary of lessons learnt so far on radar acquisition and installation & differences between radar types: WP1 (Daniel Schertzer / Ioulia Tchiguirinskaia / Auguste Gires – 20 min) – may include brief discussion about potential joint paper to summarise lessons learnt in this respect

11:50 – 12:30: Interactive session to discuss outcomes and practical implications of lessons learnt from WP1
(Examples of questions for discussion: What data quality can be expected from different types of radars in cities? How do cost and data quality of polarimetric X-band radar compare to single pol X-band and conventional national C-band radar networks? Considering the benefits as well as the costs and challenges associated to the purchase, installation and operation of X-band radars, would we suggest local authorities to purchase and operate their own X-band radars (what would be the main variables to consider when making this decision)?)

12:30 – 13:30: Lunch

Afternoon  Session

13:30 – 15:00: Presentations and interactive discussion on strategies and measures for flood prevention, highlighting approaches and experiences from the local authorities and the role of radar rainfall: WP4
